Are Bigger Brain Sizes a Subtype of Autism?

A recent study by the MIND Institute showed that bigger brain sizes may cause autism or autism-related symptoms in children.

According to the MRI scans of over 400 kids between the ages of 3 and 12 years old, there is evidence found of disproportionate megalencephaly — a subtype that has been linked to higher rates of intellectual disability and poorer overall prognosis.

David Amaral, Director of Research from the UC Davis MIND Institute, states that bigger brain size in autism has been linked to lower IQ. The study also found that the development of white matter also affects the severity of autism symptoms. Researchers found that slower white matter development in children leads to increased symptom severity. The white matter in our brain is known to provide structural connections in the brain, allowing different regions to communicate with each other.
